A long-horizon digital transformation strategy for Transnet

01

The challenge

Transnet wanted to modernise, but first it needed a clear-eyed picture of where it actually stood. Its digital capability was spread unevenly across skills, technology and ways of working, and there was no single roadmap tying strategic intent to the practical steps that would get the organisation there. It engaged First Digital to assess that maturity, prioritise the gaps, and turn the ambition into something executives could fund and the business could adopt.

02

The approach

We ran a structured three-phase engagement. The first phase was a full assessment of Transnet’s skills, technology and operating model, so the conversation started from evidence rather than assumption. The second turned that into a prioritised transformation roadmap, sequencing the capability and technology gaps against Transnet’s business objectives so the most important work came first. The third moved from plan to adoption, aligning executives behind the strategy and running targeted training and change programmes to embed the new capabilities across the organisation.

03

The outcome

Transnet came away with a medium and long-horizon transformation strategy that right-sizes its existing technology investment rather than ripping it out, and a roadmap its executives are aligned behind. The critical capability and technology gaps are identified and prioritised, and the people side is moving too, with targeted training and change programmes giving the organisation a practical route to adopt what was planned.

Summary & benefits

  • An executive-aligned digital transformation roadmap, sequenced against business priorities.
  • Critical capability and technology gaps identified and prioritised.
  • A people skills and change programme to embed adoption across the organisation.
  • Existing technology investments right-sized for a sustainable, long-horizon transformation.
